Toxic friends?

“All my friends are toxic” is a song among teenagers, and some display this on their T-shirts. The song expresses the frustration of being betrayed by friends, broken relationships, quarrels, fights, longing for community, and loneliness. There is an older saying: “Tell me your friends, I will tell you who you are.” That means the company a person keeps determines the habits, values, morals, and character. Paul warns that bad company can spoil a person’s character. (I Corinthians 15:33)
Comfortable with mockers: The blessed man values the Bible, diligently reads it, and meditates on the thoughts of Scripture Day and night. The result is that he is like a tree planted beside the streams, giving fruit during the season. In contrast, the wicked seek counsel from evil people, walk with sinners, and sit comfortably with scoffers and mockers. (Psalm 1:1-3)
Toxic: Worldly friends who pursue wealth or popularity, without reference to God, would end up as evildoers. Toxic friends inject toxicity, which is a form of hatred. Certainly, there would be mistrust and even violent fights. Such friendship leaves a person alone, remorseful, stressed, and without peace. Songs about toxic friends express futility, frustration, and foolishness.
Excellent: King David sings: “As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.” (Psalm 16:3) Those who are in Christ are saints, and they become noble as they meditate on the Scripture. (Acts 17:11) But David’s biblical song, in contrast to a toxic song, celebrates fellowship and love in God’s family.
Unity: The people of God are brothers and sisters and belong to one family of God. Brothers dwell in unity, which is a pleasant, joyful, and God-honoring relationship. (Psalm 133:1) The unity is because all love God; hence, love one another.
Fellowship: Saints of God seek fellowship. Bonded by the love of Christ, they honor one another, love one another, and serve one another. As children of light, they walk in light and not in the toxicity of darkness.
Am I delighted with the excellent saints of the Lord?
