A longing to belong is an emotional need of all humans. Each person likes to be accepted as a member of a group: family, friends, coworkers, language, ethnicity, profession, traditions, religions, etc. Irrespective of their status, age, and gender, it is a universal desire that influences a person’s physical well-being, emotional stability, and mental health. Like essentials of life, food, clothes, and safety, a sense of belonging is necessary. Paul writes to the believers in the City of Rome, stating that disciples are called to belong to Christ Jesus (Romans 1:6)
Impact: A strong sense of belonging provides self-esteem, motivation, and joy. Exclusion may cause loneliness, anxiety, depression, stress, and even health issues. A few even develop suicidal thoughts. Those who are in Christ have a great sense of belonging to God as a child of God, a member of the Local Church, and a member of the Body of Christ. (John 1:12; I Corinthians 12:27)
Group norms: When a person is accepted or is part of a group, there is a subculture with norms and taboos. To retain the group identity, an individual changes their behavior. The Local Church becomes the place of fellowship, and as a family of God, they have holiness as a motive, the Kingdom of God as a priority, and the righteousness of God as their value system. (Matthew 6:33)
Intimate relationships: Such groupings provide not just acquaintances but lasting friendships, help in times of need, and positive interpersonal relationships. The Church is not a social club or a hangout place, but a place where fellowship is appreciated and celebrated.
Contributing Factors: The local church or fellowship groups within the church provide a sense of belonging. First, there are group activities like worshipping the Lord, studying the scripture, fasting, praying, feasting, learning, doing good in the community, etc. Second, all members lead a Holy life, grow into spiritual maturity in the likeness of Christ, and become instruments of righteousness in the hands of God. Third, the new identity in Christ helps them to love the Lord and love fellow believers.
