Emperor Shah Jahan created a throne that took seven years to complete. Its cost was roughly twice the cost of the construction of the Taj Mahal. It was wrought from solid gold, studded with precious gems like rubies, diamonds, emeralds, pearls, and the Koh-I-Noor diamond. Later, it was conquered by the Persian king Nader Shah and subsequently dismantled. It is a paradox that worldly leaders and their things perish without a trace.
Leaders of the world: Humans have a desire to live long, even without facing death. They also like to perpetuate their memory by building memorials. Absalom constructed a pillar as his legacy. (II Samuel 18:18) The Lord Jesus Christ taught that the leaders of the world do things to show their power, authority, position, and popularity. They Lord over the people, oppressing, suppressing, and exploiting them. In contrast, the disciples are called to service. (Luke 22:24-27)
Ancient kings: In the ancient world, kings elaborately made Inscriptions in rocks, built memorials, gave gifts to get applause, and exalted their thrones enshrined in strong fortresses. Thrones, crowns, Scepter were uniquely designed to show off their greatness. The religious leaders were not behind. They also tried to create a legacy. In the time of Lord Jesus Christ, the Pharisees used to wear long robes, make public prayers, seek the prominent seat, and demand service for themselves first.
Modern day: Business, political, and super-rich people want to show off their riches. They wish to have private jets, yachts, the best cars, and escorting uniformed security personnel, etc. Religious leaders also live like other leaders in the community and the nation.
Model of Christ: The Lord demonstrated that he served as one among the disciples. He chose to be a servant of servants, though He was the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Setting aside His throne, glory, authority, power, and heavenly dwelling place, to dwell among humans to redeem them. Giving service rather than receiving was his choice and preference. The greatness of God is finally demonstrated in ultimate glory, but in ultimate service to His disciples.
Do I follow Christ as my model or the worldly leaders?
