God saw the Nation of Israel as a useless vessel. (Hosea 8:8) The nation became useless because they rejected the living God. Instead, their spirituality was defined by idol worship, which, in turn, resulted from rebellion and disobedience. They lost their status as His treasured possession. (Exodus 19:5) Now they have become a worthless and despised vessel. This is a warning to all believers that they should not become useless and discarded by God.
Loss of purpose: God called the Children of Israel to be the Holy Nation, representing God’s love, truth, and righteousness to the world. When Israel failed to represent God, they indeed misrepresented God. Hence, God’s name was not glorified.
Undesirable: Useless vessel means a vessel that no one desires. A leaking vessel cannot hold liquid. A broken pot cannot hold water. When the vessel does not have any purpose, it becomes useless to throw away. The useless vessel is like a vessel; no one cares. Prophet Jeremiah compared Jeconiah to a rejected vessel.
Object of punishment: The children of Israel broke the covenant with the Lord. They were wild like a wandering ass. (Hosea 8:9) They deserve punishment and judgment. God’s wrath would be poured upon them. When God judges Israel, the nation would be like a useless vessel thrown out on the ground, shattered into many pieces. Hypocrites show themselves as useful vessels of the Lord, but in reality, are of no use to anyone.
Useless but in showcase: Sometimes, vessels like beautiful mugs are broken. The owner does not want to discard it as he had paid a huge price to get it. Hence, keep it in the showcase, so that the broken part is not seen, but hidden behind. It looks beautiful, but it is not useful; it may fall off if picked up from the shelf.
God’s useful vessels: “Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonourable, he will be a vessel for honourable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.” (II Timothy 2:20-21)
Am I a useful vessel for the Lord?
