When Abraham was called by God, he was expected to follow the Lord without knowing the destination. As he began the journey, with whom Lot also joined, the relatives, friends, and neighbors would have asked him about the destination, which Abraham was not aware of. In modern days, it is like driving in a new city without GPS, Google Maps, or an atlas map. Abraham obeyed, and it was counted as a righteous act of faith. (Hebrews 11:8) Without God, the spiritual journey in the world would end in death.
Disturbed: When a person goes to a new place, where there are no acquaintances, friends or relatives, he will be disturbed in his mind. Anxiety, worry and fear grip the person. Abraham believed in God, His Promises, and His mercy to guide Him.
Distracted: There are chances to be distracted from the right path. With human wisdom, numerous paths seem to be good, but the end is death. (Romans 14:12) Prophets Isaiah states that humans are like sheep who go astray. (Isaiah 53:6) There are always broad paths that lead to hell. (Matthew 7:13) Abraham had to keep his eyes focused on the Lord and not be distracted by the attractions of the world.
Directionless: In which direction should Abraham begin his journey? He cannot choose the best highway or known ways but depends on God for direction. Abraham knew that when he was confused, not having the sense of direction, perplexed, unable to determine the next step, God would speak with him, clearly giving him the right direction. (Isaiah 30:21)
Discouraged: Abraham could have been discouraged. The Call is great, the Promise was marvelous, but the destination was not clear, but sure. Walking in faith could lead to a discouraging and lonely path; however, God is with us to make the journey a success, as He did for Abraham.
Determined: Abraham was determined in his faith, decision, and spontaneous obedient action. His steps of faith made him the Father of faith.
Do I follow the Lord as Abraham did with determination?
