One restaurant advertises like this: “You’re going to need a bigger mouth!” The food they produce is very tasty, if not healthy, and customers would need a bigger mouth. The Bible exhorts the people of God: “Open your mouth wide; I will fill it.” (Psalm 81:10) In this psalm, God reminds His children, Israel, of how He had been their provider and savior.
Big things and high expectations: The Psalmist encourages the people of God to ask for big things and have high expectations in God’s plan and purpose. William Carey said, “Attempt great things for God and expect great things from God.” God is pleased when His children bring large requests. Strangely, most believers have small or meagre prayer requests. Without faith, boldness, and a passion to do mighty things for the Lord, the prayer petitions would be petty.
Open mouth: The baby birds in the nest would open their mouths wide when the mother bird brought food from faraway. They express their trust in the mother and expect to be satisfied. The mouth of a believer is open, not only to ask or request, but to express gratefulness, praises, and worship. Paul exhorts us to give thanks to Him, always, for all things and at all times. (I Thessalonians 5:18)
Filled up: God promises to satisfy the deep longings of the soul. It is not just about the daily physical and material needs. Yes, God has commanded us to be dependent on Him and ask for the Daily Bread. (Matthew 6:11) Bread indicates all the human and earthly needs to survive, live, and thrive. However, the Lord grants us Himself – the Bread of Life, the Manna from Heaven. (John 6:35) When believers partake in the Holy Communion, they remember Christ as the Bread of Life.
Promise: God’s promise is a provision for good things. God is good, and his gifts are good and great. It includes comprehensive and compassionate care, meeting of physical, material, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs.
Do I open my mouth wide enough to receive immense blessings?
