Some metaphors used by the prophets in the bible are very strong. Prophet Isaiah compares the moral and spiritual status of the leaders of Israel to a dinner table, filled with vomit, and there is no space left or no spot without filth. (Isaiah 28:7-8)
Extreme moral decay: The description is about the leaders, priests and prophets. If the spiritual, moral, and religious leadership is corrupt, then the whole nation is unclean like the table where there was no space left. Vomit is the filthiness of sin, pride, indulgence, gluttony, selfishness, and unconcerned about people. The Nation was totally complete, and there was no sphere exempt from this immorality. A dog returns to its vomit, and the Nation of Israel returned to a lifestyle influenced by the people of different cultures living around. (Proverbs 28:11; II Peter 2:22)
Gluttony: When the belly becomes god, gluttony or excessive and obsessive consumption of food is idolatry. (Philippians 3:19) The daily necessity is exalted to a source of satisfaction and comfort. Instead, humble dependent on daily bread from the Lord, there is a compulsive, insatiable appetite for more.
Drunkenness: Wine could have medicinal benefits. But if alcohol is mixed, it becomes an unhealthy drink. Alcohol is a depressant. It depresses a person in such a way that the person loses self-control, balance, wisdom, and discernment. The priests and prophets lost their senses and became undignified and unworthy of any respect.
Consequences: The priests and prophets stagger in their visions, stumble in their ministry, and fail in their discernment and decisions. Thus, become unfit to lead the nation anymore. After their self-destruction, their congregation, community and country are destroyed.
Drunk in the Holy Spirit: In contrast, Paul counsels’ disciples to be filled with the Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 5:18) There is no depression; instead, fullness of joy, peace, and self-control is experienced when controlled and directed by the Holy Spirit. All the believers are given the One Spirit to drink. (I Corinthians 12:13) It is no wonder that the Lord offered the living water to the Samaritan woman. (John 4:10)
Am I filled, controlled and directed by the Holy Spirit?
